Case studies

  1. Solitaire is a part-bred Arab mare who has had a history of intermittent, undiagnosed lameness. Tests have all proved negative, but the lameness is apparent only when she is shod. She is rested without shoes, goes sound, resumes work, is re-shod, then goes lame again. After the last episode, the owner used the Keratex as instructed and has found that Solitaire’s feet are hard, are not cracking or splitting and she is staying sound. “We did a ten mile ride last week, mostly on the roads. And her feet are absolutely fine,” reported the happy and relieved owner.
  2. Merlin is an Arab gelding used for hacking and showing. His owner likes to turn him out each day, but Merlin is a bit provocative and ends up on the receiving end of many kicks! In order to go out with other horses which are not shod behind, Merlin must follow livery yard rules and be similarly shoeless on the hinds. Keratex has been used every week and his feet are hard, showing little sign of wear and tear, even after road hacks. He can now go out every day without risking injury from kicks. The owner said: “It’s a relief not to have to worry, either about injuries from kicks or his feet getting sore in our hacks.”
  3. “I was asked to try a product called Keratex Hoof Hardener. [After using it] I was amazed to find the horn of the wall had completely changed its malleability. Nails drove into it without any problems, there was no suggestion of the previously experienced splitting and a firm nail hold was achieved. Subsequently both horses (three year-old racehorses with acute hoof problems) were replated in front with little problem. The walls were more ‘plastic’ than they had been one hour previous. In the course of the next three weeks the feet of these horses had Keratex applied on a weekly basis. The feet are still in good shape, although harder than they had been previously. Since the initial trial I have used this product on all of the shelly footed horses I work with and all have shown equally dramatic improvements.” From Peter Baker, AWCF, Marlborough, UK – excerpt from published article
  4. “Blue is a seven year old TB who we keep at home, and so he receives every attention. Even with a lovely farrier we were unable to keep Blue’s shoes on. Every time a shoe came off so did part of his hoof. Without fail, every time my daughter had a rally or show booked a shoe would come off. Our farrier, who lives next door and is a good friend, would come immediately to put the shoe back on. This would happen every three or four days, and that is no exaggeration! Last year my daughter was distraught, because the day before PC camp, Blue’s shoe came off and was impossible to replace. Blue had to have a plastic shoe fitted and could not go to camp. We were in despair. Then the farrier gave us a bottle of your Hoof Hardener and we went four months without losing a shoe! Now Blue never loses a shoe and can even be ridden through a ploughed field, when once that would have been unthinkable. Keratex is the very last thing which I would give up.” Jean G, Lincs, UK
  5. “I am thrilled with your Hoof Hardener. It really made such a difference to my daughter’s thoroughbred. He has the typical thin walls and shallow soles. Last winter he spent most of his time in the stable with a poultice on his foot. He could only keep shoes on for three or four weeks at a time. He was constantly bruising his soles. It was so frustrating. He is an ex-racehorse and she was re-schooling him. We would just get him going and he would be off again. This winter my farrier recommended your product. I started putting it on three times a week, I’m now down to once a week. He had one bruised sole last October but nothing since. He is now being shod every six weeks (we’ve had no lost shoes). It has made such a difference.Mrs M, Dorset, UK
