Keratex Kinks - On the road to recovery
Categories: Team Keratex
We are pleased to report that the lovely Kinks is nicely settled in and getting more and more into her stride as time goes on. Due to her age the weight is beginning to be distributed differently from her youth. So we are happy that she has lost her spring grass weight. She is now ready to go into winter in just the right condition. She is now back to full health after being diagnosed with borderline laminitis and is thriving with her fieldmate Mowgli. The typical chestnut mare attitude is still firmly in place so consistency and ground-rules are very important for her temperament! Apart from the occasional mood swing, on the whole she has a very sweet personality, and we are so glad we were able to save her from being put to sleep.
After three farrier visits, Kinks’s feet are looking great. They have come back to a good solid shape and with Keratex Hoof Moisturiser used three times a week, plus Keratex Hoof Disinfectant, they are in very good condition. We are still playing the waiting game for a few very minor hairline cracks to grow out, which she came to us with, but apart from that her feet are in great condition.
Kinks enjoys a shower, so on warmer days we have been able to hose her off and work a nice shampoo into her coat. And of course we’ve been washing off her legs and socks with Keratex Hoof Wash and scrubbing it into her frogs to keep them nice and clean.
We will now be focusing on hardening up her soles before the winter weather – and mud – sets in, and then consolidating this good work with the Hoof Gel, which will protect her feet from the softening effects of water damage.
Kinks looks like the sort of horse that could get mud fever, with her pinkish pasterns, some white socks and low heels, so we will be ensuring that the Mud Shield Powder and Hoof & Leg Scrub is started before the weather closes in. It’s that time of year where we will be checking the weather forecast daily to ensure that the correct products can be used in advance. So if there’s a rainy spell coming up, we will be applying the Powder and Scrub in accordance with the label straightaway, so she is protected and ready if the ground becomes churned up a few days after the first day of rain.
We hope you enjoy the photos of Keratex Kinks with the farrier, Chris McKell. And we are hoping to try some lunging soon with her soon, so watch this space for pics!
